Publishing can be a tough business mentally, emotionally and creatively. It can feel lonely, isolating, frustrating and just plain infuriating some days.
I've created the From Written to Recommended author community so you never have to feel as if you're in this business alone, paddling against the tide.
I believe that collaboration is greater than competition.
I believe in everyone rising together.

Angela James (she/her), freelance editor and author career coach, has enjoyed nearly two decades in genre fiction publishing. She has edited bestselling books and authors, and is the creator of Before You Hit Send, a popular online self-editing and writing workshop as well as From Written to Recommended.
Dan (he/him) is Angela's assistant. He'll be giving you weekly intention-setting posts in the community forum so you can keep sight of your big picture goals, and daily accountability posts to help you track day-to-day writing, editing, publishing and marketing work. Dan loves planning and developing new services to help FW2R members get what they need from the community.
[...] have a look at your current memberships, are they working for you, are they value for money, do you feel supported and welcomed? If not, From Written to Recommended is worth trying to see if it's the right fit. Great resources, industry insight, incredible positivity.
Chasing Grace (Joint Task Team Series)
[...] this is a group that gets it, that understands how hard this writing gig can be. I'd also say how valuable it is to have positive, affirming voices in my corner, who aren't afraid to give me a gentle nudge when I need it.
I love the support and the encouragement of the community and the frequent access to new discussions and webinars. I'm a strong believer in paying it forward by sharing our knowledge, experiences, and strengths with others to grow as a group, and this community is doing an excellent job of providing a safe space to do that.

What’s the community experience like?
We believe in creating and fostering a community forum that supports and encourages inclusivity of all kinds. From Written to Recommended is a safe space for all members to feel welcome, valued and heard on their journeys. We have zero tolerance for hate speech of any kind. We emphasize connection and support because let’s face it, this writing gig ain’t easy! Our members find friendships, accountability partners, beta and alpha readers and more in a stress-free forum designed to help you engage in meaningful ways.
What’s included in your membership? Here’s a quick rundown of some of what you’ll find in the community!
We host webinars and live Q&As with industry experts, offer daily accountability as well as larger deadline accountability check-ins, and share resources that are informative and educational. Weekly short publishing videos give you bite size, actionable information on a variety of topics. Once a month, Angela also hosts Voxer Office Hours, which provide you a chance to connect with her personally and ask her a question about whatever you’re currently working on or struggling with.
All of our live and recorded content is captioned and we strive for best practice accessibility features to provide members with a fully accessible experience.
"I really like everything about this community. I love the speakers [and] people have been really generous with their time for feedback and advice. To be honest, this is really the writing community I’d been searching for!"
"Content, camaraderie, and commiserating. I guess knowing at any given moment someone out there is feeling what I’m feeling and is there to chat and cheerlead makes it all valuable."
"The community (knowing that I’m not alone with my quirks and habits), the tidbits of information from you, the industry meetings, and overall positivity and support."
"Meetings with industry professionals, office hours for questions (it's been amazing), the benefits to connecting with other authors at similar levels, sharing of resources and information, as well as the opportunities to your other classes. I may not be able to be as active as I'd like, but knowing I have a place to go and place to reach out helps."
"Way to spike my heartbeat, ha! Which is a good answer on its own. I really like all your 5-minute videos, the accountability post, the ability to connect with other authors and learn about their genres and experience. And a LOT more, but those are the things that first come to mind."
"This community has been a wonderful inspiration and I would miss all of it. I find myself looking forward once again to the writing process, something I was afraid I'd lost. The past couple of weeks have been hectic with commitments that ordinarily would have stalled my motivation but that hasn't happened. I love being able to access the content whenever I have the time."
"I would miss your videos the most. You do a great job of putting perspective on things. I would also really miss the interactions with other writers. It's nice to know there are other people facing similar challenges. Also, I appreciate that you are available for chats. It's nice knowing that there is someone who is an expert on these things from whom I ask questions, and you are also very encouraging. I love the guests. This whole thing has been very affirming and supportive."
"I love feeling like if I have an issue I have a place to come to talk about it and get multiple perspectives. I also love the workshops."
"[I]t’s the writing community I’ve been looking for, and exactly right for where I am right now. And like many others have said, I love the webinars, the publishing tidbits, the AMAZING resource that is office hours, and just generally the opportunity to learn from Angela and get feedback from everyone in the group. And it’s so, so nice that the group isn’t on Facebook!"

We don't offer refunds but only because membership in From Written to Recommended is on a monthly basis, so there's no ongoing commitment, you can cancel at any time.
I hope that doesn’t happen but we're sure not for everyone so it’s possible. There is no commitment to remain in the program, it's a monthly reoccurring subscription and you can cancel at any time, there's no obligation. We make it easy to cancel, no hassle or hard feelings. Just email us at email@example.com and we'll process your cancellation.
Yes! We have members who've written and published dozens of books. The community is designed for authors on all different publishing paths. Of course, your experience/results will differ from those of a less experienced author, but as someone who is a self-described lifelong learner, I firmly believe there’s always something new to learn and things I can help you think differently about in your publishing journey via From Written to Recommended.
This membership is right for any fiction writer looking for community. It’s publishing agnostic—the membership isn’t about how to publish via one path or another, it’s about finding your own personal journey, what works for you, and making that happen. We don't push you toward anything, we work with you to discover what makes the most sense for your vision of success.
Any genre fiction. I personally specialize in romance, mystery, and women’s fiction, so I use a lot of examples of those genres, but we have members writing romance, mystery, thrillers, science fiction, fantasy, YA, middle grade, women's fiction, etc.
The membership isn’t geared toward nonfiction writing but a lot of the publishing concepts and discussions are the same whether it's fiction or nonfiction
You are absolutely welcome to join, learn and find community in the membership. While we don't want anyone coming in simply to promote, we welcome all publishing folk who want to participate in community and grow their resources and knowledge, as well as share theirs. Remember, we believe that collaboration is greater than competition!
It’s not for you if you say things like “All Lives Matter” or you think people worry too much about books and publishing being “politically correct”.
The membership is founded on the idea of being a positive and inclusive place, but we're not going to say there's no politics, because people's lives are being impacted and legislated every day.
This community was formed to be a safe, welcoming group, inclusive of all who may have previously not felt heard or included in prior memberships or communities. This group will always be 100% LGBTQIA+ friendly, supportive of Black Lives Matter, open to people of all ethnicities, race, gender, disability, religion, sexuality, background, and will demonstrate that human rights are not debatable or open for interpretation or politicizing.
It’s also not for you if you’re offended by swearing (I say fuck a lot), sex jokes, or other forms of humor.
We aren't going to tear down other memberships in order to get you to join ours because I believe in lifting each other up, not creating an environment of competition. When we lift each other up, we all grow and succeed. This is about you, as an author, getting your needs met and dreams achieved, so maybe this membership won’t be the right one for you but someone else’s will!
The main difference in this membership is the ongoing access to Angela for support, knowledge and feedback, as well as the Q&As with industry experts, which are really a more intimate look into Angela and other industry insiders conversing, versus a formal Q&A.
No, the membership has members from a variety of time zones across the globe.
The only thing that has a specific time is the monthly industry expert webinar or Q&A, and that is 7pm Eastern.
If you cannot attend for any reason, you can send in questions ahead of time and we'll answer them in the live Q&A and then you can watch the recording or read the transcript!
All recorded and live video content is captioned.
The membership is on Mighty Network, which is accessible to screen readers but does not have alt-text for images, so we ask members to provide alt-text in the post when providing an image.
We’re using a new platform to deliver the content and the platform providers have not yet tested the screen reader capabilities. This is something we and others have urged them to make a priority. If you’d like to test the platform to see if it will work for you, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will give you access to one of our hubs with free content.
Yes! All past content is available to you when you join.
No, we believe the membership is more than reasonably priced for the content and support provided.
Yes! When you join From Written to Recommended, you can become an affiliate and invite others to join. You will receive just over $5/month per referral for as long as you and your referral are both members. Referral fees are paid out via PayPal, so you must have a PayPal account.
Some of our members have paid for most or all of their monthly membership cost via the affiliate referral program.
We will re-open to new members in November/December
I do not offer discounts on my services (I would be paying you to be a member if I did that, lol!) but FW2R members do always get a discount of some sort on any program I offer, ranging from free to $25.
Hey! You made it to the end of the page. Did you watch my video at the top of the page? Wondering why I gave a little chuckle at the beginning? Here's a little bonus blooper video just for fun. Because you should know what you're getting into 😉
