Editing can seem overwhelming, I know.
Especially when the way it currently looks for you is ANYTHING but easy.
If you’re being honest, sometimes trying to figure out how to edit your own work downright SUCKS.
Hard truth: your efforts thus far haven’t helped you gain much confidence and give your readers the book they’re clamoring for yet.
Maybe your efforts have given you some great ideas or things you know you “should” do, but you still somehow backslide into old habits, like procrastination and overwhelm. And sending your friends funny cat videos.
You’re starting to just give up altogether because it’s looking like NOTHING will make a difference. You might have even convinced yourself that you just suck as a writer and maybe you should pack it all in (and sometimes you say this to yourself multiple times a day).
I know because I’ve seen authors struggle with this over and over again, which is why I’m so excited to bring my expert solutions to YOU.
I want to help.
Hi! I’m Angela James, top-shelf editor of hundreds of fiction books, including several NY Times #1 bestsellers, and I help fiction authors achieve clarity and confidence in their editing and writing skills by telling you not just how, but why. I help you understand the craft of writing and editing using a touch of humor, a lot of practical examples, and a clear, concise explanation for how something can have an impact on your story and the reading experience.
"I took Before You Hit Send 1.0 before I released my first book (back in 2013!), and it taught me how to fix a head-hopping, body-part floating, cliche-laden mess into a book I was proud to publish.
I have no doubt that BYHS 2.0 will be amazing."
USA Today Bestselling Author
I’ve worked with thousands of authors, both in Before You Hit Send over the past decade, and through individual edits, and I know exactly where authors get stuck and why edits can feel like an insurmountable task.
I also take a unique, and perhaps radical, approach by encouraging you to release the “writing rules” that have been holding you back and weighing you down, and giving you the tools to look objectively at your work while determining what’s going to give the reader—and you—the best story experience.
We want readers to know that you’ll deliver an excellent product with each and every story. This is how you build fans and how you create bestsellers!
In Before You Hit Send, I’ve developed a course that’s a combination of concrete action items, a roadmap for editing, expert insight and information about the craft of writing, an open mind to writing voice, and an unlearning and release of writing “rules”.
I give you an editing checklist as the framework for taking action and a textbook with all of the information. I help you implement some tried-and-true strategies, and I take you on a journey of understanding how all the parts work together to create one amazing story.
But, Angela, I’m pretty sure it’s impossible and there’s no way I’m ever going to be as good as Nora Roberts, Kennedy Ryan, Sarah J. Maas, Vi Keeland, Stephen King, Nalini Singh, Angie Thomas or any other successful authors.
Not true! Every author started from the beginning—the beginning of their story, the beginning of their career journey, and the beginning of their craft. Very few authors have an innate ability to craft the perfect story right out of the keyboard their first (or second, or third) time.
They all had to learn through trial and error, with the help of editors, critique partners, beta readers, and through writing and craft courses.
A 6-week course that will change the way you approach edits forever.
In just 6 weeks, learn an editing process that will eliminate that “where to start” frustration, give you confidence in your skills, and help you deliver a consistent quality story time after time.
"I have taken Angela's course[...]it was eye-opening and have helped me become a MUCH better at self-edits. And, I no longer fear the dreaded revision process! Highly recommended for all writers at any level."
"I've taken Before You Hit Send twice and will take it again later this year because your workshop, out of all the workshops I've ever taken, has given me the most tangible and actionable writing/editing advice ever."
"Before You Hit Send is an informative workshop designed to help authors edit their work. The workshop is not only useful to authors who are planning on submitting work to publishing houses, but also to self-published authors who just want to tap into some of the techniques used by professional editors to ensure that their work is ready for publication. […]the workshop is useful to writers of all genres and experience levels."
"If you get a chance to take Before You Hit Send, you'd be a fool not to grab the opportunity. Most practically useful workshop I've done in the 9 years I've been in the biz. You won't regret it."
This is the course foundation and vital to building a successful process. Using a series of quick videos, we create a common language for talking about writing and editing craft, root out misconceptions about writing “rules”, and create an early editing checklist that offers quick wins and concrete ways to quickly polish your manuscript. ($197 value)
"BYHS is the best writing craft course I’ve ever taken. Easy to follow, practical and entertaining, BYHS provides a strong self-editing foundation that will help your manuscript shine and take the sting out of subsequent rounds of revisions."
"My writing life is divided into segments: #BeforeB4YouHitSend and #AfterB4YouHitSend. I’ve taken Angela James’ self-editing course twice and one of the greatest benefits was that it prepared me to interact more efficiently with the editor who now works with me on all my manuscripts. Before You Hit Send is an extraordinarily well-priced investment offering something that’s hard to put a price on: the expertise of a seasoned, professional editor on a daily basis for the duration of the course."
When I shut this course down in May 2020, it would have been easy to walk away and not offer it again while I focused on other parts of my business. But serving authors and helping them succeed and achieve their publishing dreams has always been at the core of my publishing career and I know Before You Can Hit Send is a vehicle that can help authors bring their manuscript to the next level.
This is the course that authors point to time and again when people say “What’s a really great craft course that will help me get better at editing and writing” and there’s no other course out there like it.
And now the course is back in a supercharged, entirely up-leveled, game-changing version and I’m so excited to bring new students through it and give you access to all the information I’ve been using with my authors in edits for twenty years in publishing.
Join me in Before You Hit Send 2.0: Winning Tactics to Edit Your First (or Next) Bestseller and if after completing the first 7 days of lessons, the BYHS Bootcamp, you don’t find I’ve taught you new concepts that you can use to apply to your writing, I’ll refund your money.
Angela James is a freelance editor and author career coach who helps fiction authors overcome lack of writing experience, lack of confidence, frustration and overwhelm so they can create an excellent reader experience with each and every book, and achieve their vision for publishing success
She’s passionate about supporting authors because she knows from her years of experience the struggle of not having confidence in your writing. Over her nearly two decades in publishing as an editor, working directly with authors on their books, she’s been responsible for hundreds of authors improving their writing and editing and offering readers a quality reading experience.
Now, she’s helping authors like YOU do all of that with less effort and stress with her simple approaches at a fraction of the cost of hiring her one-on-one with her course Before You Hit Send: Winning Tactics for Editing Your First (or Next) Bestseller.
When she’s not teaching, editing or coaching, you can find Angela reading five to six books a week, playing farmer with her backyard chickens, or kicked back at the camper, drinking a beer. But never all three together because the chickens aren’t invited on camping trips (yet).

Yes! I’ve had bestselling authors take this course to continue to level up their writing. Your experience/results may not be as dramatic as those of a less experienced author, but as someone who is a self-described lifelong learner, I firmly believe there’s always something new to learn and things I can help you think differently about in your writing through the course of BYHS.
This course is right for any fiction writer looking to improve their skills. It’s publishing agnostic—the course isn’t about how to publish via one path or another, it’s about how to write and edit for the best possible book and best possible reader experience. That’s something that’s important no matter what avenue of publishing you’re taking!
Not necessarily. I’ve had brand-new writers take the course because they want to learn the concepts taught and apply them while they’re writing. It is helpful to have something to apply the lessons to, but it can be a practice manuscript, something you’re critiquing, or a book you’re reading (just, you know, don’t ever EVER send an author feedback on their published book based on what you learned taking this course. That wouldn’t be cool.).
Most genre fiction. I personally specialize in romance, mystery, and women’s fiction, so I use a lot of examples of those genres, but it will work for anyone writing any subgenre of romance, mystery, thrillers, science fiction, fantasy, etc.
This is an interesting question because the course isn’t geared toward nonfiction writing but I’ve absolutely had nonfiction writers take it, since there’s some focus on writing voice and style. Nonfiction authors aren’t the target audience for this course but you sure are welcome to take it!
I’ve had people from all different groups take this course. Particularly editors, because I teach very practical information about editing, voice, style, and how to think critically about it while also viewing each book as a unique thing. If you want to learn more about writing and editing on a broader level, this course has helped many do just that.
It’s not for you if you say things like “All Lives Matter” or you think people worry too much about books being “politically correct”. The program includes sections on editing your book for representation and microaggressions, as well as thinking about consent and misogyny.
We’ve also taken a hard look at the course material to change language such as hero/heroine to protagonist or main characters and if this offends you, the course is absolutely not for you.
It’s also not for you if you’re offended by swearing (I say fuck a lot), sex jokes, or other forms of humor.
There are some absolutely incredible writing courses available to authors and I am always happy to recommend those that I know are available and great, because I believe in lifting each other up, not creating an environment of competition. When we lift each other up, we all grow and succeed. This is about you, as an author, getting your needs met and dreams achieved, so maybe this course won’t be the right one for you but someone else’s will!
This course is perhaps more comprehensive than many that are available and one key difference is that it’s taught by me, and so I focus on my core beliefs around writing and publishing: author voice is vitally important—but not at the sake of reader experience, the reader experience is the end goal, I want you to embrace your unique style of storytelling and writing and not get bogged down by writing rules, and I give you permission to release some of the feelings of obligation you may have toward writing advice or feedback you’ve gotten in the past.
No, the course is self-paced and modules are released weekly, so no matter what time zone you’re in, you can participate in the lessons and the Facebook group.
The only thing that has a specific time is the welcome meeting as well as the 3 live Q&As, and those will be on a weekday afternoon, Eastern time (times and dates to be determined).
If you cannot attend for any reason, you can send in questions ahead of time and I’ll answer them in the live Q&A and then you can watch the recording or read the transcript!
No, we’ll be dripping content and bonuses out. Some content you’ll receive right away, some you’ll receive weekly.
The official course start is Wednesday, April 21st. The course wraps up the week of June 2nd.
All recorded and live video content is captioned. We’re using a new platform to deliver the content and the platform providers have not yet tested the screen reader capabilities. This is something we and others have urged them to make a priority. If you’d like to test the platform to see if it will work for you, please email us at email@example.com and we will give you access to one of our hubs with free content.
Hey, life happens and we don’t want you to be stressed about having to get the course done in a timeline that doesn’t work for you. That’s why we’re giving you lifetime access to the course materials so you can catch up when you’re ready.
Yes, we encourage you to watch and read along as lessons are released, because that will give you the opportunity to participate in the live Q&As and get your questions answered, but even if you’re not able to watch the lessons each week, still come to the Q&A because you can take notes and get aha moments from your fellow authors.
Yes! You can pay a one-time fee of $397 or 3 payments of $149.
Yes, if you took a paid, online version of the course directly through me, there’s a discount. This does not apply to anyone who’s taken an in-person/online course through an RWA chapter or other writing group.

Yes! FW2R members get a discount on all of my webinars/courses. Please go to the community board, there’s a discount link available to you there.
You’ll be given an opportunity to join the membership at checkout, and the discount will be applied if you choose to join then. A 3-month membership commitment is required.
We haven’t determined when we’ll launch again. That’s not a trick to try to get you to sign up now, we just honestly don’t know. It’s taken us a bit to get to the point of having BYHS 2.0 ready for relaunch and we’ll want to take some time after to see what worked, what didn’t, and what needs to be revised, changed, or added to the launch, the technology, and the course.
So if you feel like you’ll need it in the next few months, it’s probably best to buy it now.
Yes, pacing is covered in a high-level way in the workshop. The pacing webinar is an intensive 2-hour webinar (broken up into smaller chunks so it’s easy to consume and with a 20-page workbook) that takes the topic and supercharges it for further learning. I’m offering it to you at a deep discount to enhance your experience.
In this 2.0 version, I took the material and updated it. Every lesson has been updated, has video lessons, and we've also added workbook pages for many of the lessons. In addition, there are some new lessons that have been added.
I would say that the 75% of the material will feel familiar, but refreshed. Approximately 25% of the material is brand new.
We use Searchie.io to deliver all of the content and bonuses. You will get a registration link for the Before You Hit Send 2.0 hub on Searchie before the course start date.
The community portion of the course is hosted via my free Facebook group, where I support all of my products and webinars.
From Written to Recommended, my paid author community, is hosted on Mighty Networks.
It’s not always an easy decision, I know.
I believe in you and know this course can help you gain confidence and gain back wasted time flailing about, trying to figure out where to start or how to edit the right way.
I want you to invest in yourself. I want you to believe in yourself!
But, like all good things, this opportunity will soon pass!
So don’t wait too long to make a decision! You only have ONE WEEK to gain access to these winning tactics. The cart closes on Sunday and the course starts April 21st!
