You’ve decided to embark on a journey that will unravel the intricacies of the publishing world. But sometimes, that journey can be lonely if you’re not doing it with fellow writers at your side. In this article, we explore different ways to create community as an author, editor, or publishing professional beyond social media.
Because let’s be honest… sometimes, you need something deeper and more meaningful than a slew of likes or the occasional comment on your post.
Understanding Your Needs as an Author
Every author is unique, which means what you need for support and community will differ from the other 100s of authors that I regularly work with and coach. Start by identifying your unique challenges and your “why” for seeking an author community. Do you want co-working opportunities so that you actually write the pages you said you were going to? Do you need input on a chapter you recently drafted? Do you need someone to support you and hold you accountable?
Whatever your “why” is, it will shape your “what” and your “who.”
Meaning, what kind of community will best support you and who you want to work with.
For example, in the Success Alliance, we regularly work with authors who want more support and accountability. Each quarter, we work together to develop plans and goals. For authors who have a rigorous writing and publishing schedule, this process is invaluable.
Explore and Evaluate Your Options
There’s so much content available to you that you might feel overwhelmed about what kind (read: format) of support is best for you. You might decide to work with local writer’s groups, take an online course with a community component, or invest in a high-touch author membership.
Again, as you’re exploring and evaluating your options, keep coming back to your “why.” Why did you want this support in the first place?
That question (and your answer) will guide you to finding the best solutions for yourself.
Be sure to consider other factors, too, like cost and convenience and commitment. If you join that group, will you actually show up and benefit from the support?
